Greetings and blessings to all of you. Question…. What are we as a Body of Christ building on and what is the Body of Christ building with? These two questions must be considered continually throughout our Christian life. As believers we must build on Christ and Christ alone. In the first book of Corinthians Paul taught them corrective behavior in obeying God. They wanted to build on the teachings of men rather than Christ. Do You? They wanted to follow Cephus, Apollos and possibly Paul. (I Cor. 1:10-17). Wrong living comes from wrong beliefs. So, Paul explained to them “for we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.” Christ has laid the foundation of the church with His blood and chose apostles to teach the followers of Christ. The foundation has been established with the Gospel message of Salvation through Faith in Him. Therefore, since Christ has given us the free gift of Salvation, we are responsible like Paul to proclaim(build) this gospel in word and deed. However, we must consider what will that look like… what are we building with. In I Cor. 3:12 Paul lists several types of materials that can be used in the construction of the church (the Body of Christ). He said, “For no one can lay a foundation other that which is laid which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, or wood, hay, straw. Each one’s work will become manifest… for the DAY will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done….” This passage is emphasizing the building of the church. Which will be able to withstand the test of fire? Are you using High quality lasting materials or are you using flammable temporary materials? Building on Jesus means making Him the cornerstone of your life, trusting in His promises, living out His teachings, relying on the Holy Spirit, being part of the community of believers, enduring trials, and holding onto the hope of eternal life. Consider the story of Ananias and Sapphira a couple in the Body of Christ who decide to deceive the church about their financial offering in the book of Acts. 5:1-11. They forgot- we forget that God is Holy and His standards are perfect; therefore, the best we can do is to remember who we are working for and that is Christ our Lord -Our Savior and that we will be judged on our works.
