Greetings and blessings to all of you. Memorial Day will be celebrated for those who have served in the military and for the families of the soldiers who died defending the United States of America against all and any attack on the principles of what God wants. This holiday begun after the Civil War (1861-1865) and expanded to include all wars thereafter. God had said there would be wars and rumors of wars that will precede the end of the age. All wars had voices that were loud, chaotic, and shaped in thought by fear and division. It has been stated that political rebellion at its root is ultimately a rejection of Christ’s Kingship and that could be said of all wars. In the book of James, he explains that conflicts and arguments come from selfish unfulfilled desires waging war from the heart of an individual or a political party or a religious sect. He said, “what causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want so you quarrel and fight.” (James 4:1-2) In God’s divine plan (or His sovereignty), He views the conspiracies of the nation leaders with disdain; laughing at the futility against His plans. The Bible states, “Why do the nations rage and the people plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His anointed…He who sits in heavens laughs- the Lord holds them in derision…” (Psalm 1-4) For example, in the Civil War which began because of the uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power of national government; to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. Abraham Lincoln was voted in as President in 1860 (who was against slavery) angered the states who wanted to continue slavery for financial and political reasons; also, to keep the class structure and the subjugation of human beings under their control. Therefore, they made a decision to secede and form a new nation called the Confederate States of America. Do we as a Christian nation understand that freedom comes with a cost…wars and deaths? Did you know there is a parallel between the freedom brought by Christ death and the physical freedoms secured by fallen troops? “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John15:13
