Greetings and blessings to all of you. This is Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem, marking the start of Holy Week. The Bible is a prophetic book. Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was the fulfillment of the word found in Zech. 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout O daughter of Jerusalem; See your King comes to you righteous and having salvation; gentle and riding on a donkey …” In Matthew 21 Jesus instructed two of His disciples to go to an adjoining village to find a donkey and its colt. Notice he is not riding on a decorated stallion to represent a worldly king but on a colt; to represent his humility and courage as well as a political move. This prophecy in Zechariah was intended to introduce another kingdom -the Kingdom of God. As Jesus rode toward Jerusalem the people began waving palm branches praising God for giving them a king or the awaited Messiah. Expectations were in the mind of the crowd. Groupthink was at its highest. Allow me to digress a bit. In this 21st century we are guilty of that also. Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon in which people strive for consensus within a group. We will set aside our own personal beliefs and critical thinking and adopt opinions of the rest of the group for the purpose of being accepted/liked by the masses and illusions of harmony. Groupthink can have negative consequences. It can lead to bad decisions and obedience to the wrong authority. For example, when we enter into the election year the big question to the professing Christians are we going to hold to our Christian principles and vote as Jesus would or are we going to follow the crowd and vote as the crowd does? The crowd was fickle. Palm leaves were waving as some yelled Hosanna which means save us now. Some were expecting him to be a national leader like our leaders of today. Some expected Him to restore their nation to its former glory; when redeemed Israel will experience the fulfillment of all the promises in the Abrahamic Covenant. Again, the crowd was deaf to the words of their prophets and blind to Jesus real mission. He came to save them spiritually. He was coming as their Savior as well as their King. Today the world is plagued with problems and Israel struggle to survive but God has a plan that will change everything…look toward the cross…..
