Greetings and blessings to all of you. How should we think about making New Year resolutions? Consider Phil. 3:13-14 “Brothers I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Don’t you want “the prize?” Our New Year resolutions should have that in mind. The Bible said in Psalm 90:12 “teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom” Are you committed to preparing yourself to be the “bride of Christ” as stated metaphorically in Ephes. 5:25-32? Are you committed to glorify God and to live purposefully in light of eternity promoting His work in your life? What about growing in Christian disciplines like reading the Bible from beginning to end or praying consistently for your loved ones and our nation? Or maybe we are like Jonah 4:1-2 who did not want to see the Ninevites saved from destruction. Do we not desire to become more like Christ? How about making goals that will build up the Body of Christ? Christ’s coming motivates us to love the unlovable, to reach the lost, to comfort the hurting, and to expand the rule of Christ. By the way, we do not change ourselves God changes us. But we must depend on his power and strength. Check your motivation. Is it about you or is it about growing in the grace of God? Too often our New Year’s resolution is about self-will- our self-determination; rather than relying on God’s grace and mercy. The word says in Phil.1:6 “being confident of this that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” We can become legalistic pursuing self-improvement divorced from the working of the gospel in our personal lives. We say in our mind this therapeutic statement, “I will become a better person this year” however it should flow from wanting a deeper relationship with Christ. In the coming years, let us grow, mature and become Christ like… resolving to do whatever will give God such great pleasure in you and I that He will say... well done good and faithful servant…enter into the Kingdom of God. This year we should be disciplined and intentional with commitment as we occupy till He comes keeping watch because you do not know what day He will come.”
